Delhi hospital’s 80 staff members test +ve for covid, surgeon dies despite being vaccinated

In an incident showing India’s apparent disability to get a grip on the covid situation, a Delhi hospital reported around 80 medical personnel infected with covid-19 and the death of a surgeon despite being vaccinated. The caseload was from a period of one month.

The incident comes from Saroj Super Speciality Hospital of the national capital where dozens of doctors and staff members tested positive for the deadly virus and one doctor died at the age of 58.

Speaking with NDTV, Chief Medical Officer Dr PK Bhardwaj said, “Around 80 medical staff have tested positive between April and May. Dr AK Rawat was my junior, a surgeon… he succumbed to Covid yesterday.”

Despite his condition, the doctor was fighting the virus with courage. Reminiscing the last conversation he had with the doctor, the CMO said, “He (Dr Rawat) was brave enough, he was fighting. He said ‘I shall feel alright, I am vaccinated’.”

The tragic news comes amid India’s growing tensions over the shortage of survival essentials for covid-19 patients with an ever-increasing number of infected cases.

Saroj Speciality, a private hospital, had reached the Court last month for requesting orders for immediate supply of oxygen as the facility had run out of it. Oxygen treatment has become vital in the treatment plan of severely ill covid patients.

“Situation has slightly improved but there is always anxiety as to when we will get the next stock of oxygen,” said the Chief Medical Officer.

With decreasing oxygen content in the national capital and repeated orders from the High Court to the Centre for providing the required quantities, the top court directed the formation of a 12-member National Task Force. This committee will responsible to evaluate the availability and distribution of medical oxygen in different states.

Fighting the grim situation of the second coronavirus wave, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal went ahead with the extension of lockdown. With tighter restrictions and no metro facilities too from tomorrow, the lockdown will now remain in place till May 17 in the city.
