Delhi Transport Department To Soon Roll Out QR Based Driving Licence, Registation Certificates

As Delhi continues to take steps towards digital India, the Delhi Transport Department has announced that they will soon be issuing QR based Smart Cards for Driving Licenses (DLs) and registration certificates (RCs).

Smart Card To Link And Validate The Users’ Information

As per the new statement released, the new driving licence will be embedded with an advanced microchip with features like Quick Response (QR) code and Near Field Communication (NFC). The new RC will come with the owner’s name printed on the front and the microchip and the QR code would be at the back of the card.

The cards earlier also had the chips but the chip reader machines were not available in the required quantity with both the Delhi Traffic Police and the Enforcement Wing of the Transport Department. Moreover, the chips were designed and implemented by the states which made it difficult to retrieve information.

The release said that with the QR based smart card, the issue will be resolved. The smart cards will ensure unification in the linking and validation of the user’s information with Sarathi and Vahan. They both are two online databases for driving licenses and vehicle registrations.

QR Will Do Away With Manual Intervention

As per the release, the QR will be implemented all across the country. The QR code reader is procurable and will do away with manual intervention.

The new Smart Card based DL and RC will have chip based/ QR code based recognition system. In an October 2108 notification released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, documents like driving license and registration certificates were made valid in digital formats on DigiLockers and mParivahan.

The QR code is also said to have an added advantage of being a safety measure on teh smart card. With the QR code system, the department will be able to retain records and penalties of the DL holder.
