‘Do or die’ situation for TPCC president with Munugode bypoll

Munugode MLA K Rajagopal Reddy’s decision to quit both the Congress and State Assembly has placed TPCC president Revanth Reddy in a ‘do or die’ situation.

The by-election in the Assembly constituency will be a high-stakes affair not only for Revanth Reddy but also for Congress, as a setback could ruin his political career besides jeopardize the party’s prospects in the next Assembly elections.

The TPCC president will have a difficult job getting the party workers on a single platform, let alone winning the bypoll, analysts say, given the skirmishes among the State Congress leaders.

While Revanth Reddy exuded confidence while speaking to the media in New Delhi on Tuesday, the ground reality was quite different.

According to a senior Congress leader, much will depend on winning the confidence of party workers in the constituency, since it is unclear whether they will follow Rajagopal Reddy or remain loyal to the party. The party leadership would also face a challenge in finalizing a candidate for the elections if any favoritism occurs.

Huzurabad’s by-election demonstrated this. A section of leaders was not happy with the TPCC’s decision to field NSUI leader B Venkat in the election and only briefly participated in the campaign. A weak candidate was fielded by the State Congress in the Huzurabad byelection for obvious reasons, according to the Congressman.

“Unlike the Huzurabad by-election, things have changed. Revanth Reddy’s performance can have an impact on the party’s prospects in the Assembly elections,” according to an analyst. BJP’s state unit is also keen on making inroads in its weakest district, Nalgonda, through these elections.

The ruling TRS has a strong chance of winning the by-election because it has more votes than Congress, the analyst said, who says in the fight between Congress and BJP, the ruling TRS has a better chance of winning.
