Doctors Urge Government to Review Covid Vaccines

After pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca admitted in a UK court that its Covid vaccine may cause blood clots in rare instances, a group of doctors expressed serious concerns about the safety of the Covishield vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India.

At a press conference, the doctors, representing the Awaken India Movement (AIM), called on the government to reassess the scientific basis of all Covid vaccines and audit their commercial release. They also urged the implementation of a rigorous monitoring system to promptly identify adverse events.

“The government has overlooked the growing reports of tragic deaths following Covid vaccinations and continues to promote the vaccines as ‘safe and effective’ without proper scientific examination and application of epidemiology,” Dr. Tarun Kothari, a radiologist and activist, stated at the event.

The doctors raised concerns about the side effect known as Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS). When the COVID-19 vaccines were rolled out, many people were unaware they were being distributed without the completion of phase-3 trials, explained Dr. Sujata Mittal, a gynecologist and oncologist.

Dr. Mittal added that awareness of vaccine injuries is particularly low in India. She noted that thousands of women reported menstrual irregularities after vaccination, which was confirmed later in a study published in September 2022 as a side effect of the vaccine.

The AIM has been documenting Covid vaccine-related deaths and sharing information with various national authorities since 2021. Dr. Kothari criticized the government’s failure to respond to their repeated requests to investigate the deaths and other negative outcomes following vaccination.

The AIM called on the government to compensate all victims of Covid vaccine injuries, including their families, and involve vaccine manufacturers in the process.
