Drive against illegal sirens will continue till last siren is removed: Hyderabad Traffic Police

The city traffic police have booked 1,557 cases in the last 12 days as part of a special campaign against the illegal use of sirens.

The special drive, which was carried out after City Police Commissioner C V Anand responded to a distraught commuter’s tweet, completed 12 days. The drive will continue until the last illegal siren is removed, according to a press release.

“In the last 12 days, Hyderabad Traffic Police not only booked 1557 cases but also removed illegally fitted Sirens. The field officers also appraised the rule’s position to the owners/drivers of the vehicles,” the press note stated.

The City Traffic Police Department has asked its citizens, particularly those who drive four-wheelers, to refrain from using sirens without permission and those who do have the authorization, to use it only in case of emergencies.

“The traffic police will continue this special drive until the last siren is removed. Drivers of four-wheelers are requested to cooperate during the vehicle checks,” the press release said.

Police have been ordered to detain and seize all vehicles equipped with unauthorized sirens.

Siren usage guidelines

According to the rules, sirens are only permitted in vehicles used as ambulances, for fire fighting or salvage, or in vehicles used by police officers, operators of construction equipment vehicles, or Motor Vehicles Department officers in the course of their duties. As a result, any other use of sirens is illegal, and the police will take strict action against those violating the law.

The Hyderabad Police Department’s initiative to crack down on the illegal use of sirens is commendable. The misuse of sirens not only disrupts traffic flow but also endangers the safety of other road users.
