Employees of Hyderabad Metro Rail stage protest for pay hike

Employees of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) staged a sit-in protest during their working hours on Tuesday, demanding a wage increase. Their protest disrupted offline ticketing services.

Protesters claim to be paid around Rs 11,000 per month and have not received a pay increase in five years.

“We demand to hike our pay to Rs 15,000 to 18,000,” employees said. Long lines were seen in front of the ticketing counters as a result of the protest.

The protestors claimed that they have been suffering for some time as a result of unpaid salaries. They also claimed that officials were not addressing their concerns about working conditions.

The ticketing employees stated that they were having difficulties because relievers were not attending to duties on time and the officials concerned were not responding. They also alleged that they were not even being given time for lunch.

They have stated unequivocally that they will not resume duties until their salaries are increased. They wanted a firm guarantee from the contracting agency. Employees demanded that higher-ups intervene to ensure justice.

Concerned about the lack of salary increases for the past five years, employees on the Red Line route called for a strike and abstained from work.

Meanwhile, Metro officials reported that a few ticketing employees from a contracting agency had abstained from work with the purpose to disrupt train operations, causing passenger inconvenience.

“They are also spreading rumors and misinformation out of vested interest. Their claims are false and their actions are highly against the public interest, which will call for stern action by the HMR management. The management ensures due facilities and benefits are given to staff, however, will be discussing with them to learn more,” they added.

The officials also stated that train operations are on schedule and that sufficient manpower is available.
