Erratic Water Supply Causes Frustration Among Hyderabad Residents

The rising temperatures and ongoing maintenance of water pipelines in Hyderabad, particularly in the western areas, have led to a significant disruption in the city’s drinking water supply. Residents in various localities report receiving water only once every four to five days, often at extremely low pressure, exacerbating their daily struggles.

Despite the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSB) claiming efforts to enhance piped water supply, acute shortages persist across multiple neighborhoods. Some residents attribute this persistent issue to declining groundwater levels, despite the city experiencing ample rainfall during the last monsoon season. Recent data indicates that groundwater levels in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits have dropped by an alarming average of 9.46 meters below ground level (BGL).

Ongoing pipeline maintenance has further complicated the situation, leaving many residents without regular access to water. Bachupally and Narampet neighborhoods have been particularly hard-hit, with residents reporting irregular water supply accompanied by low pressure. Many have turned to private water tankers for relief, only to face cancellations that leave them without any viable options.

“We don’t understand why we are not receiving water on time. Currently, we get water once every five days, and even then, it’s at a very low pressure,” shared Sal Teja, a frustrated resident of Narampet. He added, “Even when we book water tankers, they get canceled automatically, leaving us no choice but to rely on private options.”

Residents have voiced their dissatisfaction with the lack of temporary solutions from the water board, resulting in seemingly endless complaints that remain unaddressed. Srinivas, a resident of Malkajgiri, expressed his frustration: “We are tired of repeatedly complaining to the water supply officials. They insist that water is being supplied, but the reality is that we are not receiving it on time.”

The affected areas include not only Narampet and Bachupally, but also Kondapur, RK Puram, and Sainikpuri, highlighting the widespread nature of the crisis. Local residents are calling for immediate action, urging the water board to increase supply frequencies, especially during the scorching summer season when demand is at its peak.

As complaints roll in without effective responses from the authorities, Hyderabad’s residents are left uncertain about when their water supply issues will be resolved. The situation calls for urgent attention and remedial measures from the HMWSB to ensure that all citizens have access to this essential resource.
