Saturday Nights Turn Dangerous: Drunken Driving a Growing Menace in Cyberabad

What was once a time for leisure and family outings, Saturday night in Cyberabad is increasingly becoming a threat to road safety—thanks to the growing menace of drunken driving. The recent traffic enforcement drive conducted by the Cyberabad police paints a grim picture: 284 individuals were caught driving under the influence, with an overwhelming 248 of them riding two-wheelers.

This is not just about law enforcement statistics—it reflects a deep-rooted problem in our urban culture, where drinking and driving has become disturbingly normalized, especially during weekends. The highest number of violators were caught in Miyapur, a fast-growing suburb with booming real estate and rising traffic. 53 drunk drivers in one area on a single night is not just a violation—it is a warning signal.

Despite repeated awareness campaigns, stringent laws, and visible policing, too many citizens still treat the rules as optional. Drunk driving is not a mistake; it is a deliberate act of endangerment—one that risks not only the driver’s life but that of innocent commuters, families returning from dinner, and workers heading home after a long shift.

Saturday nights now come with an unspoken anxiety for many Hyderabadis: Will we make it home safely? Will we be unlucky enough to cross paths with someone who shouldn’t be behind the wheel? This fear is unacceptable in a modern, progressive city.

The efforts by Cyberabad Traffic Police—booking cases, detaining vehicles, mandating counselling, and pursuing court trials—deserve appreciation. But clearly, enforcement alone cannot change behaviour. We need a cultural shift. Community leaders, youth influencers, and educational institutions must join the fight to change attitudes. Bars and restaurants, too, should take more responsibility—promoting cab services or designated driver systems.

Until we treat drunk driving with the seriousness it demands, Saturday nights will continue to be nights of danger on our roads. It’s time to reclaim our weekends from recklessness and remind ourselves: a single poor decision can cost many lives.
