Hyderabad: As evident in our daily lives, Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) is a very critical element for sustainable development of the city, comprising of segregation, storage, collection, processing, and disposal of waste.
Waste segregation at the source is the most relevant step that will help the environment and helps to reduce the accumulation of garbage in landfills. Segregation post collection of garbage takes longer, costs more, and can wind up harming the environment if it leads to recyclable waste being sent to landfill.
The simplest way to solve this problem is through practicing proper on-site segregation of waste through clearly-marked containers for different kinds of waste (Wet & Dry). Wet waste typically refers to organic waste usually generated by eating establishments and Dry waste includes paper, wood, metals, glass, etc. If 100% source segregation is achieved then 80% of it can be recycled. GHMC believes in inculcating this habit of source segregation at the childhood stage itself which in turn may drive them to become responsible and environment-conscious youth later.
In view of promoting this practice in children, GHMC is conducting essay writing competitions in schools in GHMC limits on the topic of “Importance of waste segregation at source”. This activity aims to create awareness among school students on the importance of source segregation of waste and the benefits of it saving resources and the environment.
Students are encouraged to participate in the competition which can be submitted in English, Telugu, or Urdu as per the medium of the school.
The competitions are going on at the school level (Conducting by schools on their premises) up to the 7th of August. GHMC will felicitate the best essays among them, on August 13. (NSS)
