In a development stirring political and religious debate, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, the President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, has issued a fatwa against popular Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay. The fatwa comes in response to alleged negative portrayals of Muslims in Vijay’s films and his recent Iftar party invitations.
Speaking to news agency , Maulana Razvi Bareilvi stated that the fatwa was issued after receiving complaints from Sunni Muslims in Tamil Nadu, who expressed anger over what they perceived as disrespectful and damaging depictions of their community.
“He (Vijay) has formed a political party and maintained cordial relations with Muslims. However, he has portrayed Muslims in a negative way as those who spread terrorism in his films. Gamblers and liquor consumers were invited to his Iftar party. Due to all this, Sunni Muslims of Tamil Nadu are angry with him. They asked for a fatwa. So, in my answer, I have issued a fatwa mentioning that Muslims should not stand with Vijay,” said the cleric.

Vijay, who recently launched his political outfit, Tamil Nadu Vijay Karthik (TVK) party, has not officially responded to the fatwa as of yet. The TVK party, which is gaining attention ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, has been attempting to build a broad support base across communities.
The issuance of the fatwa is expected to have political ramifications, particularly in Tamil Nadu where minority votes play a significant role. The controversy also reignites longstanding debates about the representation of religious communities in Indian cinema and the responsibilities of public figures.
The incident has drawn mixed reactions, with supporters of Vijay dismissing the fatwa as politically motivated, while others call for more sensitivity in cultural representations. Further developments are awaited as political observers and community leaders weigh in on the issue.
