Over the past three days, street vendors and vegetable sellers in the city have experienced a decline in customers as many people have left for their villages to celebrate Bathukamma and Dasara festivals. The hawkers note that more than half of their usual customers have gone to their native places.
Vikram, a street vendor in Balanagar, expressed, “For the last three days, vegetables are not been sold due to the festival. Everyone in the state is celebrating Dasara and Bathukamma with their family members at their homes. People living in the city whose parents are in the villages went to their native place. So, there is a shortfall of customers for the vendors in the city.”
The vendors are grappling with the challenge of perishable vegetables that won’t last more than four days. Consequently, a significant amount of produce is going to waste. Rani Bai, another vendor, shared her struggle, saying, “On Wednesday, I sold vegetables worth only Rs 100, and I got Rs 15 out of it. Since two days we have been coping with this kind of situation. On other days, I usually sell vegetables worth more than Rs 500 per day. But due to Bathukamma, women left for villages. If I get customers tomorrow, then it will be fine for me, or else I will run into losses.”

Dasara and Sankranti are typically times when people leave for their villages, but this time, vendors are experiencing a more significant shortage of customers compared to previous festivals. A vendor named Shabbir emphasized, “More than half of my vegetables are not sold out. Festival means a celebration with family. If we don’t have money, how can we celebrate the festival?”
