First state-run Waterschool inaugurated in Hyderabad

At Durgam Cheruvu in Madhapur in Hyderabad, MAUD Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar inaugurated ‘Waterschool’, the first state-run school for sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, stand-up paddling, and allied water sports.

In collaboration with the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) established the school to teach yachting and allied water sports to underprivileged students. During the next two weeks, it will be open to the public.

The Special Chief Secretary encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunity and enroll. Through the Waterschool, students will have access to the 14 years of experience of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, which has produced more than a hundred state and national medalists.

In addition to serving as a hub for all water sports, Durgam Cheruvu’s clean waters will serve as a nursery for future Asian and Olympic champions. Arvind Kumar said that homegrown national and state champions would play a large role in the coaching process.

State-of-the-art equipment is available at Waterschool. Sailors who trained at the Yacht Club have already competed in a host of international competitions and World Championships. In addition to being a sophisticated training center for both serious and recreational sports people, the school will serve as a nursery for sailors who will learn the basics before moving on to national and then Asian events.

According to Waterschool authorities, all watersports are expected to be popular, especially sailing and windsurfing for the younger and kayaking and stand-up paddling for the older.

The students said sailing is an offbeat sport, and many from Hyderabad have included it in their resumes to great effect in their admission process to US universities, where they continue to pursue their inculcated passion for watersports. Besides learning about the Olympics Class Laser and International 420 Boats that will be positioned at Waterschool, adults can also learn about the Olympic Class Laser and International 420 Boats.

Additionally, Waterschool plans to host water-based corporate leadership and team-building programs and revive the famous Kayakathan and Hydrathon events that once swept the city. A lifesaving certification program will also be introduced over time by Waterschool.
