Five killed, four injured as car rams truck near Tirupati

Tirupati  : Five persons, including two women, were killed and four others injured when the car in which they were traveling rammed a truck near Guravarajupalle, 20 km from here, on Friday.

Police said while four people were killed on the spot, another died in the hospital and the condition of two injured remains critical. The mishap occurred at 4.30 am when the ill-fated car with ten pilgrims coming from Rudravaram village of Achampet Mandal in Guntur district were on their way to Tirumala, rammed a stationary truck. Police suspect that the driver of the car might have dozed off behind the wheel resulting in the accident.

The injured were admitted to SVRR Government hospital. The deceased were identified as Satyanarayana Reddy (40), his wife Vijayalakshmi (38), Prasanna (14) and Chenna Kesava Reddy (12) and the driver were killed on the spot. Five more were injured in the accident and three are in a critical condition. The driver, who was said to be over-speeding did not realize that the lorry was parked on the left side of the road. Police said the driver might have dozed off at the wheel while driving and caused the accident.

The police also said the lorry was wrongly parked on the road and they have filed a case against the lorry driver for wrong parking on the highway. They also said there were no speed breakers and they had sent instructions to the Roads & Buildings department for installing the same immediately. (NSS)
