G7 To Deliver Half of 870 Million Covid 19 Vaccine Doses; WHO Confirms

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently said that the leaders of the G7 countries (Japan, USA, UK, Canada, France, Italy, and Germany) have agreed to share at least 870 million doses of Covid 19 vaccines directly.

WHO Confirms G7 Leaders’ Support to COVAX

As per the latest reports, the G7 leaders recently conducted a summit. Amongst many other decisions made, Covid 19 situation globally held a priority. To tackle the situation, the leaders have reaffirmed their support for COVAX which is an initiative by the WHO to ensure Covid 19 vaccination for every nation in need.

WHO further confirmed that the leaders will deliver at least half of the 870 million vaccines to COVAX by the end of this year. While welcoming the G7’s commitment, COVAX partners have also called for their continued support for exporting the vaccines in significant proportions, promotion of voluntary licensing and not-for-profit global production.

WHO recently reported that COVAS has been facing supply gaps with the vaccines and is focusing on securing as many vaccination doses as possible. It will work with the G7 and the other countries to share the doses as quickly as possible.

WHO Director-General Emphasizes Rapid Action for Covid 19 Vaccine Delivery 

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General said that many of the countries are also facing a sudden surge in the Covid 19 cases and some of them don’t have vaccinations. He said that the race is for everyone’s lives and some of the countries have barely left the starting line.

“This is an important moment of global solidarity and a critical milestone in the push to ensure those most at risk, everywhere are protected,” said Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

Berkeley further added that their goal is to end the acute phase of the pandemic. And they look forward to working with the countries to ensure that the “doses pledged turn to doses delivered”.
