Gandhi Hospital’s Psychiatry Department Calls for Full-Time Psychologist Amid Rising Patient Influx

The Psychiatry department at Government Gandhi Hospital is facing a critical shortage of resources as it currently lacks a full-time psychologist. With a notable increase in the number of patients seeking mental health support, the department has reached out to senior officials, including the hospital superintendent, to sanction and fill the crucial position.

In recent months, the department has been experiencing an influx of patients, with nearly 40 individuals visiting the outpatient department each day. Additionally, the hospital accommodates around 15 inpatients, utilizing 30 available beds. Dr. K. Anupama, the Assistant Professor and In-Charge Head of the Psychiatry department, emphasized the urgency of the situation. “There is a pressing need to appoint a psychologist at Gandhi Hospital. We have formally requested officials to expedite this process,” she stated.

To raise awareness about mental health issues, the department has been actively conducting various programs, including drama performances, awareness walks, and educational talks, particularly in front of the outpatient department. These initiatives aim to enlighten the community about critical issues such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies.

Dr. Anupama explained the nature of cases being handled: “Most of our patients come to us with personality disorders. We assess and investigate their conditions before commencing treatment, all free of cost.” The department also caters to campus students through a special student cell that has proven to be invaluable over the past year.

One notable case involved a graduate who approached the cell in a state of crisis, feeling suicidal. After immediate counseling, the student’s situation was communicated to his parents, who provided the necessary support. Witnessing their understanding and affection led to a positive turnaround in the student’s condition.

In addition to individual therapy, the Psychiatry department also manages medico-legal cases, including those involving alcohol-related harassment and schizophrenia. The state government’s de-addiction centers play a pivotal role in assisting individuals struggling with addiction issues.

The ongoing demand for mental health services underscores the critical need for adequate staffing and resources in the Psychiatry department, as officials continue to advocate for the appointment of a full-time psychologist to better serve the community.
