Concerns have been raised following a report that revealed 44 infant and 14 maternal deaths at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad during August. The majority of these cases were reported from districts including Hyderabad, Medak, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Siddipet, sparking widespread alarm.
In response to the data, Dr. Raj Kumari, Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, clarified that the numbers were consistent with previous years, and the reports circulating on social media were exaggerated. Speaking to *The Pioneer*, she stated, “There is no abnormality compared to previous years. The data circulating on social media is exaggerated. We are responsible for submitting it to higher authorities, and action will be taken against those who leaked it.”
Dr. Kumari further explained that the hospital deals with an average of 260 to 270 inpatients daily, many of whom arrive in critical condition, often requiring mechanical ventilation. The August statistics, which reported 41 infant mortalities (IMR) and 13 maternal mortalities (MMR), were deemed “normal” for the hospital, considering the severity and complexity of the cases handled.

A comparison of the monthly data reveals a noticeable increase in both maternal and infant mortality rates. For example, in July, the hospital reported 33 infant deaths, while June, May, and April saw 33, 26, and 22 infant deaths, respectively. Maternal mortality rates in July were recorded at 12, with June at 6, May at 8, and April at 7. These figures mark a rise compared to previous months but reflect the challenges posed by the complexity of the cases.
State Health Minister Raja Narasimha also acknowledged the statistics, referencing the data on maternal and infant mortality rates for previous months. He noted that in March, the hospital recorded 10 maternal deaths, followed by 5 in February, and 7 in January. Infant mortality rates for the same months were reported as 36 in March, 25 in February, and 25 in January.
The increase in both maternal and infant mortality rates at Gandhi Hospital is a growing concern. However, the hospital administration has emphasized that the rise is directly related to the critical nature of the patients admitted, many of whom arrive in life-threatening conditions. The hospital has committed to submitting accurate reports to the relevant authorities and addressing any internal leaks of sensitive information.
As Gandhi Hospital continues to be a crucial facility in Hyderabad for handling high-risk pregnancies and neonatal care, the rising mortality rates may prompt further investigation into the hospital’s resources, management, and approach to dealing with critical cases.
