Six months after the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) launched online birth and death certificates, little progress has been made, despite the fact that several grievance applications remain pending.
Many people have protested to the GHMC via Twitter about the delay in issuing these certifications. The procedure becomes more difficult as middlemen and unscrupulous officials try to extract money through various tactics.
The process of obtaining a birth certificate takes about 15 days because the applicant must first provide the hospital discharge summary to the GHMC’s customer service centre. The applicant then fills out the paperwork and gives it to the Assistant Medical Officer of Health (AMOH), who then gives it to the data entry officer after it has been cleared.
After receiving authorization from the AMOH, the data entry operator double-checks the information and uploads it to the GHMC server. Applicants can get the certificate at Mee-Seva centres. The treatment takes approximately 15 days. However, because numerous birth and death certificate grievances have been languishing for months or even years, document writers, private agents, and other intermediaries take advantage of their desperation and earn thousands of rupees to do the official’s bidding.
The data entry officer checks the information before uploading it to the GHMC system. The certificate is available at any Mee-Seva centre.
The SR Nagar police recently discovered a false birth certificate fraud, and five people were arrested.

Harish Daga, a civic activist, told the Times of India that this is not a new phenomenon. “The swindle of fake birth certificates is not new. They (GHMC) must ensure that the issues are resolved in a timely way. Transparency and accountability must be restored by instituting appropriate standard operating procedures.”
