In a surprise inspection ,Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi ordered the temporary shutdown of the APC chicken market in New Moti Nagar, Hyderabad, after discovering severe hygiene violations. The raid, conducted with MLC Balmuri Venkat, revealed unhygienic conditions that posed a serious health risk to the public.
During the inspection of the chicken market located in Esamiya Bazaar, Koti, the Mayor was confronted with a strong, unpleasant odor emanating from the market. She also observed that the meat was being stored and sold under unsanitary conditions, violating food safety standards. Deeply concerned, the Mayor directed the zonal commissioner to immediately initiate proceedings to seal off the market.
To address the situation further, the Mayor ordered the local medical officer to work alongside sanitation and entomology teams to clean the surrounding areas of the market and eliminate any potential health hazards. These actions are part of GHMC’s broader initiative to improve food safety and hygiene across the city.

This raid follows a similar surprise inspection conducted just a week ago, where Mayor Vijayalaxmi visited Mughal Restaurant in Lakdikapul and Dine Hill Hotel in Masab Tank. Both establishments were found to be violating hygiene standards, prompting the Mayor to issue stern warnings. She reminded restaurant owners that violations could lead to penalties, including the closure of their businesses, and emphasized that all food establishments must comply with the required hygiene regulations.
Additionally, Mayor Vijayalaxmi announced that any hotels or restaurants operating without proper food and trade licenses would face immediate penalties. GHMC has recently intensified its efforts to promote food hygiene in Hyderabad, with awareness campaigns and inspections targeting food vendors and establishments. Street vendors are being provided with hygiene kits, including aprons, head caps, and gloves, to ensure proper food handling.
Despite these increased measures, violations continue to be found, highlighting the ongoing challenge of maintaining cleanliness in some eateries. Through these inspections, the Mayor aims to assure citizens that GHMC is committed to enforcing strict hygiene standards, ultimately working to improve the quality and safety of food served to the public.
With her firm stance on food safety, Mayor Vijayalaxmi is setting a clear example of GHMC’s dedication to maintaining public health and improving dining conditions throughout Hyderabad.
