The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had been busy with various initiatives undertaken in the year 2022, ranging from road infrastructure improvements to increase the city’s green cover to steps to conserve and restore heritage.
Sanitation campaigns received equal attention, ranging from the adoption of newer practices such as Secondary Collection and Transfer Points to providing impetus to effective collection and disposal of construction debris. Then there were more projects being developed to address urban poor issues.
The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao inaugurated the Shaikpet flyover on January 1, 2022, as part of the Telangana government’s ambitious Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP).
This year, nine SRDP projects, including flyovers, an underpass, and a Road under Bridge (RoB), were made available to the public.
“As the number of people choosing Hyderabad over other cities to reside and invest is increasing, the infrastructure is being developed by the GHMC to not only meet the present requirements but also plan and work for the future needs,” said Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi.
Prioritizing greenery alongside infrastructure development, the GHMC had a target of planting 120 lakh saplings in its jurisdiction by 2022 under the State government’s flagship program ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram (TKHH),’ and green efforts are underway.

The handing over of brand new 2BHK houses built under the State government’s Dignity Housing scheme, formulated by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, was one of the biggest game changers in the lives of the poor this year.
Several families who had been living in dingy slums with few facilities for decades had a new beginning in 2022, with Bandamaisamma 2BHK Housing Colony in Bansilalpet, Indira Nagar Dignity Housing Colony in Khairatabad, and Old Marredpally 2BHK Dignity Housing Colony in Old Marredpally, among others.
Meanwhile, to empower women from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), the civic body, in collaboration with banks, assisted 8,973 Self Help Groups (SHGs) in receiving Rs 467.16 crore loan at a lower interest rate this fiscal year until December.
The State government’s efforts to improve access to primary healthcare for slum dwellers and the poor continued to expand with the construction of new Basti Dawakhanas.
Other measures included skill development training, issuing identity cards to street vendors and disbursing loan amounts to them, and constructing multipurpose function halls.
