Government Announces Free Fine Rice and Major Welfare Initiatives for Citizens

Telangana’s Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Wednesday outlined several welfare programs designed to benefit every eligible individual in the state. Speaking at Praja Palana Gram Sabhas held in Manakondur, Choppadandi, Vemulawada, and Dharmapuri constituencies, Reddy emphasized that these initiatives aim to provide comprehensive coverage and reach all corners of society.

Reddy described the welfare programs as an unprecedented move in independent India, highlighting their focus on inclusivity and accessibility. He was joined by Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, and other senior leaders, including MLAs K. Satayanarayana, Medipally Satyam, Aadi Srinivas, A. Lakshman Kumar, and MLC Jeevan Reddy, who were present to support the government’s initiatives.

One of the key announcements made by Uttam Kumar Reddy was the issuance of new ration cards to all eligible individuals. The government plans to ensure that the Public Distribution System (PDS) reaches every eligible beneficiary with a transparent and accountable process. He urged the public to check their names in the beneficiary lists and apply during the ongoing Gram Sabhas or through designated officials. Reddy criticized the previous BRS government for issuing fewer than 40,000 ration cards during its 10-year tenure, calling it an unfulfilled promise to the people.

To further strengthen the welfare measures, Reddy confirmed that all ration cardholders would receive 6 kg of fine rice free of charge. This new initiative aims to provide better food quality, replacing the coarse grain distributed earlier, and ensuring that the benefits are not misused.

The Minister also took aim at the previous BRS regime, accusing them of failing to deliver on the promise of double-bedroom houses. “As Housing Minister in the previous Congress government, I oversaw the construction of lakhs of Indiramma houses. However, BRS failed to fulfill their promise of 2BHK houses in 10 years,” he said. In contrast, the Congress government has reintroduced the Indiramma Indlu programme, offering Rs 5 lakh for house construction to eligible families. The government is committed to providing housing for all poor families until saturation is achieved.

Additionally, Reddy announced the increased support for farmers under the ‘Indiramma Rythu Bharosa’ scheme, raising it to Rs 12,000 per acre for cultivable landowners. The Congress government has also waived off crop loans in a single installment, reaffirming its pro-farmer stance.

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar highlighted the welfare schemes being implemented by the Congress government since it took office in December 2023. These initiatives include free travel for women in RTC buses, free power up to 200 units, gas cylinders for Rs 500, free power for farmers, and crop loan waivers. The government is implementing various other schemes targeting all sections of society, reinforcing its commitment to the welfare of the people.

With a focus on fulfilling election promises and ensuring that no one is left behind, the Congress government’s welfare programs aim to provide tangible benefits and improve the lives of the citizens of Telangana.
