Government Hospitals in Telangana Modernize Cataract Procedures with High-End Phaco Machines

The government of Telangana has invested Rs 3.46 crore in 12 high-end phaco machines to modernise cataract procedures in government hospitals. These equipment will allow ophthalmologists to perform phacoemulsification, a contemporary cataract surgery technique routinely used in private eye care centres. While phacoemulsification surgery costs between Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000 in private centres, it is now free at the state-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital in Mehdipatnam and other district hospitals.

Two of the 12 devices would be provided at SD Eye Hospital, one at Malakpet Area Hospital, and nine at Government General Hospitals in Mahabubnagar, Warangal, Nizamabad, Sangareddy, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Vikarabad, Nalgonda, and Khammam. The purchase of these equipment seeks to shorten patient wait times and allow surgeons in regions to perform free cataract surgery.

Underprivileged people will no longer have to pay for cataract procedures using phaco machines, according to Health Minister T Harish Rao, because the surgery will be provided for free at government facilities. With the acquisition of two more phaco machines, the SD Eye Hospital, which already has five phaco machines, will be able to significantly cut waiting times. According to Dr. Raja Lingam, Superintendent of SD Eye Hospital, the new devices would allow district surgeons to execute high-end cataract procedures at no cost.

The programme also includes plans for a modernised SD Eye Hospital building, which will improve the facilities available for cataract surgeries.
