Government to Construct New Osmania General Hospital Building at Goshamahal

In a significant development, the Telangana government has announced plans to construct a new building for the Osmania General Hospital (OGH), which is currently in a deteriorated state. This move has sparked mixed reactions among residents and healthcare professionals.

The proposed building will not be constructed on the existing hospital premises but at the Goshamahal Police Grounds, approximately two kilometers away from the current location via Malakunta Road. While this shift offers the prospect of a modern facility, it also raises concerns regarding accessibility for the poor, a hallmark of Hyderabad’s three major government hospitals—Osmania General Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, and NIMS Hospital.

The current site of OGH, situated in the heart of the city, has long been favored for its ease of access to impoverished patients from across the state. Many patients rely on public transportation via Secunderabad Railway Station and the MGBS bus terminal to reach these facilities. The NIMS Hospital, for instance, benefits from its strategic location along a major highway. In contrast, the Goshamahal Police Grounds are located within the Old City, an area with narrower roads that might pose challenges for easy access.

“The three hospitals are critical lifelines for the poor, and their accessibility is key to their utility. The new location’s road infrastructure does not match that of the current OGH site,” noted Shankar, a local resident. However, he added optimistically, “A new building is much needed, and people may get accustomed to it once it starts functioning.”

The foundation stone for the new building is set to be laid by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy by the end of January. While the decision has drawn attention to the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure, it also highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing modernization with the needs of Hyderabad’s most vulnerable populations.
