Governor’s Concerns Delay TSRTC Merger Bill Approval, Invites Employees for Meeting

Employees of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) have been protesting the failure of Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to sign the TSRTC merger draft bill. In reaction to the protests, the Governor has requested clarification from the state government on five specific topics pertaining to worker welfare and financial aspects of the merger.

The Governor voiced the following concerns:

  1. There is a lack of information about central grants, shares, loans, and other support given to TSRTC since 1958.
  2. Inadequate thorough information on changing the status of TSRTC in accordance with Schedule IX of the State Apportionment Act.
  3. The state administration claims that TSRTC employees would be treated equally with government employees, and the Governor wants to know if the Industrial Disputes Act and labor regulations apply to their difficulties, and how their benefits will be maintained.
  4. In the merger draft bill, it is unclear if all TSRTC personnel will receive pensions on par with government employees.
  5. Because there are no posts analogous to conductor, controller, and so on among government employees, specific information on how RTC staff would be given with justice and other advantages regarding promotions and cadre normalization are required.

The TSRTC merger bill, which was approved by the state cabinet led by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, seeks to merge the TSRTC with the government, awarding 43,373 company employees the status of government employees. Employees have protested the Governor’s delay in signing the bill.

In reaction to the demonstrations and in order to reach an agreement, the Governor has invited TSRTC employees to a meeting at Raj Bhavan on Saturday. She expressed her worry about the public inconvenience caused by the prolonged strike and emphasized that she is thoroughly investigating the problem to protect the employees’ rights.
