Gyanvapi row: Asaduddin Owaisi criticizes RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat over his comments

In a statement on Friday, Asaduddin Owaisi, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president, criticized remarks made by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on the Gyanvapi row, saying that Ayodhya wasn’t even on the Sangh’s agenda before the VHP was formed.

During a virtual conversation with ANI, the chief of AIMIM said “Bhagwat’s speech on Gyanvapi cannot be ignored. We should recall the agitation for Babri Masjid, which was necessary for historical reasons. Before the judgment, RSS participated in the demolition of the masjid without respecting Supreme Court’s orders. Are they going to do the same on Gyanvapi?”

Furthermore, he questioned Jagat Prakash Nadda’s and Mohan Bhagwat’s assurances that peace and harmony would be maintained in the country.

“Who is Mohan or Nadda to offer assurances about these issues? They are not constitutional leaders. Let the Prime Minister’s Office make clear where it stands on the issue and on the Places of Worship Act, 1991. If he stands by it, all these Hindutva upstarts would have to stop,” he said.

In a sharp remark, Asaduddin Owaisi said that it is an old Sangh tactic to disown things when they are unpopular but then own them later on. Remember Savarkar and Godse? he asked.

He continued that even during the Babri Masjid agitation, some people said that they would follow the apex court’s orders while others said it was a matter of faith and the court did not have the authority to make such a decision.”

Bhagwat emphasized on Thursday that there is no need to search for shivlings in mosques on a daily basis and escalate a controversy needlessly while stating that the Gyanvapi mosque has a history that cannot be changed.

During the closing ceremony of an RSS training programme in Nagpur, Bhagwat said the Sangh would not launch any further agitations after Ram Janmabhoomi.
