Heavy Rains Reveal Flaws in Hyderabad’s Infrastructure

The heavy rain and thunderstorms that hit Hyderabad city since Wednesday evening have once again revealed flaws in the civic infrastructure and a lack of preparedness on the part of the civic body, as familiar scenes of residential pockets facing flood-like situations have been repeated week after week.

People in the most flooded areas slept through the night as rainwater and water from overflowing drains and lakes entered their homes. A man was washed away by flowing rainwater in Borabanda, along with a two-wheeler, in a terrifying situation. Fortunately, the locals were able to save him.

Roads were flooded in many areas, and areas such as Manikonda, Borabanda, and surrounding areas experienced a flood-like situation as streets turned into rivers and bikes and auto-rickshaws were washed away in floodwater.

Rain hit the city’s north side until Thursday morning. Wednesday night was terrifying for the city’s east, north, and west. Torrential rains began around 6 p.m. and quickly spread to other areas. The city’s eastern outskirts were completely submerged in water.

The Wednesday night rains brought back memories of the October 2020 floods in Hyderabad. Several bikes and auto-rickshaws were washed away in rainwater in Borabanda, Yousufguda, and other low-lying areas as rainwater flowed like river water.

Begumpet, Alwal, Trimulgherry, R K Puram, and other neighborhoods were flooded. Secunderabad, Qutubullapur, Gajularamaram, Alwal, Kukatpally, Moosapet, Bowenpally, Erragadda, Borabanda, Punjagutta, Basheerbagh, Mehdipatnam, Himayat Nagar, and other areas experienced severe water stagnation.

Water managed to enter several homes, forcing residents to flee to higher ground for safety. Commuters experienced lengthy traffic jams on their way home from work. Along with the heavy rain, there was a power outage in the city. A large number of residential apartments in various neighborhoods had their basements flooded, and vehicles were submerged.

They could be seen pumping out water until Thursday afternoon. Furthermore, citizens were seen on social media blaming the government for not taking preventive measures during the rains.
