Hindi is Not the National Language: Ashwin’s Statement Sparks Controversy

Recently retired Indian cricket veteran Ravichandran Ashwin has found himself embroiled in controversy once again, just days after his retirement from international cricket. His comments about the Hindi language have sparked a nationwide debate. Ashwin stated that Hindi is neither the official language nor the national language of India. This statement has caused quite a stir.

While addressing students at an engineering college in Chennai, Ashwin posed a question to the audience: “Is anyone interested in asking a question in Hindi?” Surprisingly, no student showed interest. Following this, Ashwin remarked, “I believe I must say this—Hindi is not the national language of the country; it is only an official language.”

Ashwin’s statement came on January 10, coinciding with World Hindi Day. The former cricketer delivered this statement during a session with students at a private college. It is worth noting that while Hindi is not India’s national language, it holds the status of an official language, a designation granted on September 14, 1949. The Indian Constitution states that Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, shall be the official language of the country.

Ashwin, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, made the statement amid the ongoing celebrations for World Hindi Day. Ashwin retired following the third Test match of the five-match series between India and Australia, held in Brisbane.

During his illustrious career, Ashwin played 287 matches for India and took a total of 765 wickets. He showcased his bowling brilliance across all formats, particularly excelling in Test cricket. Ashwin stands as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 537 wickets, following Anil Kumble’s record of 619 wickets.
