Orthodox mentality still prevails among Indians who believe that silencing a person’s love affairs can only be done by killing them. Amid a case of suspected honour killing, a couple was murdered allegedly by the woman’s family members in a bid to stop them from blossoming their relationship.
The incident took place in Aurangabad district of Bihar where a 22-year-old man and his 19-year-old girlfriend were stabbed to death and later were even tried to be burned in an attempt to hide their deed on August 9th. According to a senior police officer, the murder was carried out by the family members.
Aurangabad Superintendent of Police (SP) Pankaj Kumar mentioned the arrest of two individuals pertaining to the case. He said that three more have been detained for interrogation.
The SP disclosed that the couple hailed from the Kapasia village which falls under the Mufassil police station of Aurangabad. The victims were in a relationship since the last two years which did not go well with their clan.
Both were at the boyfriend’s home when the family arrived and warned the woman to come with them. Her brother killed them upon hearing her refusal, suggesting a matter of honour killing.
“The woman was at her boyfriend’s residence on Saturday morning when her family members reached there and asked her to leave immediately. As she refused, her brother allegedly stabbed the two of them to death. The 22-year-old was probably alone at home during the time of the incident. Prima facie, it seems to be a case of honour killing,” the SP said.
After the grievous crime, the family allegedly carried the dead bodies over to the ghat for burning them. They had placed them on the pyre for cremation and put fire to it when a few locals raised eyebrows on the scenario and immediately informed the police.
The half-burnt bodies were recovered by the team of officers who reached the river ghat, the SP said, adding that an FIR has been registered with names of the accused, including the arrest of the man’s brother and uncle.
“An FIR has been lodged in the case and 10-12 persons from both the families have been named accused. Two persons, the man’s brother and uncle, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident, and at least three persons detained so far,” he told PTI.
The family members of the woman have escaped and are on the run. Police is investigating the case further and the accused are expected to be caught soon.
