Amid rising concerns about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh, a noted developmental pediatrician and public health specialist, has reassured the public that HMPV is not a new or mysterious virus. Speaking to the media, Dr. Santosh clarified that HMPV cases occur annually in Hyderabad, typically from July or August to January, and there is no need for panic.
“HMPV causes symptoms such as cough, cold, and fever in most cases. However, in rare instances, it can lead to severe illness requiring hospitalization, oxygen support, or even ventilation,” Dr. Santosh explained. She also noted that there is no specific antiviral medication for HMPV, and treatment focuses on symptomatic relief.
While urging calm, Dr. Santosh highlighted the importance of vigilance, especially in light of recent reports of HMPV outbreaks in other countries. “We do not know if China is experiencing its usual seasonal outbreak or if a new mutant of HMPV is causing more severe cases there,” she said.
She also stressed the role of responsible behavior in minimizing the spread of respiratory viruses, including HMPV. Parents were advised to avoid sending sick children to school, as a mild illness for one child could escalate to a severe condition in others.
“Follow cough etiquette, wear masks when necessary, and practice good hand hygiene during this season, when respiratory viruses like Influenza, HMPV, RSV, and Adenovirus are prevalent,” she recommended.
HMPV, first identified in 2001, is known to cause respiratory infections, particularly in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. While cases of HMPV are common during the colder months, public health experts emphasize preventive measures to mitigate its spread and protect vulnerable populations.
Residents of Hyderabad are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize preventive healthcare practices during the peak season for respiratory viruses.
