Hyderabad: 2687 booked for drunk driving in April; Rs 35.90L fine collected

The traffic police have conducted special drives in the city under Operation ROPE and have booked 1019 people for illegally using sirens since April and 1600 since January.

While 2687 people were booked for drunk driving in April, with a fine of Rs 35,90,500 collected, 13,429 people were booked since the beginning of 2023, with a total fine of Rs 3,21,39,060 collected.

The cops filed 1717 chargesheets and presented the convicts in front of the Metropolitan Magistrate Courts in Nampally, where they were fined Rs 35,90,500. However, 1317 people have been sentenced to prison since the start of the year.

Similarly, 63,508 were booked for wrong-side driving only in April of the total 2,30,974 booked since the beginning of 2023. In the same month, 1019 people were booked for the illegal use of sirens.

In September 2022, Operation ‘ROPE’ (Removal of Obstructive Parking and Encroachments) was launched with the goal of removing all obstructions caused by illegally parked commuter vehicles and materials by shop keepers/street vendors either on main carriageways or on footpaths, and facilitating safe pedestrian movements at all intersections.

As part of the operation, city traffic officers educated commuters both personally and through various social media platforms.

Traffic cops strictly enforced the laws against violations, booking 45,710 people for breaking the stop line rule, 9337 for free left, 5179 for wheel clamp obstruction and encroachment of carriageways or footpaths in April with the registration of 42 FIRs.

In April, 13,431 people were booked for triple riding, along with 864 RTC buses, 1908 heavy vehicles for overload, 12,125 for incorrect number plates, and 1517 for black films.

The city traffic police have stated that the data indicates the need for drastic action to prevent the loss of lives, which can be avoided simply by following basic traffic rules.

In addition, traffic officers will continue to conduct special drives on the wrong side of the road, triple driving, and other commuter safety violations until the desired results in terms of road safety are achieved.

At all intersections, Operation ROPE has resulted in a significant change in citizens’ personal commuting behavior.

Respondents convicted of drunken driving and other traffic violations may have difficulty obtaining government jobs, passports, and visa clearance.

The culprits of the offense were also counseled at TTI, Goshamahal, and Begumpet. The campaign against drunk driving and other violations will continue for the safety of road users.

As a precaution for their own safety, Hyderabad traffic cops ask motorists not to drive while intoxicated and to obey traffic laws.

The Traffic Police have said these special drives and the execution of Operation ROPE are solely aimed at ensuring a smooth flow of traffic, regulation, and individual road safety.
