Hyderabad Air Quality Deteriorates After Diwali Celebrations

The city of Hyderabad’s air quality suffered significantly as a result of Diwali celebrations marked by the exploding of firecrackers. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in several regions of the city has reached a “unhealthy level,” according to IQAir statistics.

The overall air quality score was 161, suggesting that PM2.5 particle concentrations were 17.2 times greater than the World Health Organization’s air quality recommendation.

AQI levels were observed to be excessive at several pollution monitoring stations throughout the city. The US Consulate station had the highest AQI (341), indicating that it was the most harmful air-bearing location. Other places with poor air quality were KPHB, Zoo Park, New Malakpet, Somajiguda, Saidabad, Koti, and Banjara Hills. Kokapet, which has a history of poor air quality, has the lowest AQI at 30, which falls into the moderate range. Manikonda, Madhapur, and Central University also reported moderate air quality.

The use of firecrackers during Diwali festivities has been highlighted as a major contributor to the decrease in air quality. Wearing masks, closing windows, utilizing interior air purifiers, and avoiding direct contact with outsiders are all recommendations for inhabitants.

The aftermath of Diwali festivities could be seen on the city’s streets, with discarded leftovers of crackers, boxes of sweets, and other rubbish contributing to the post-celebration cleanup.
