Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed the Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMRL), NVS Reddy, to halt the Airport Metro Rail alignment via the Outer Ring Road between Raidurg and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGI) at Shamshabad.
The Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has underlined the importance of investigating alternative alignments between MGBS-Falaknuma and LB Nagar via Chandrayangutta.
The Airport Metro project, which is anticipated to cost Rs 6,250 crore and would have ten stations, is currently being reviewed for a potential change in direction. During a detailed evaluation of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, its expansion plans, and the Airport Metro project, CM Revanth Reddy encouraged the HMRL MD to consider cost-effective options.
Alternative routes proposed include Mailardevpally, Jalpally, and P7 Road, as well as Barkas-Pahadeshareef and Srisailam Road. The CM emphasized that if a straight-line alignment could save money, it might cross open parts of the airport grounds that are controlled by the government.
CM Revanth Reddy directed a comprehensive probe into the situation after expressing discontent with the perks offered to Metro rail concessionaire L&TMRHL, particularly given the non-completion of a 5.5-kilometer length in the Old City. He emphasized the significance of analyzing the concession agreements of L&TMRHL, GMR Airport, and Metro Rail’s extra concession agreements to protect government interests.
Taking a balanced approach, the CM asked top officers to create a city master plan. He questioned why the Airport Metro alignment was being fixed along the Outer Ring Road in the GO 111 area, when development options were restricted. CM Revanth Reddy underlined the necessity of improved accessibility and connectivity, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing an Airport Metro alignment through the Old City, given the considerable population residing in the central, eastern, and Old City areas.
The Hyderabad Airport Express Metro line, which runs for 31 kilometers from Raidurg to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, was inaugurated as an important addition to the city’s transportation network. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) was granted the contract for this project, and its contribution to the successful completion of the 72-kilometer Hyderabad Metro Rail Project was critical. The Airport Metro project was conceived to meet the growing demand for efficient and quick transportation to and from the airport, while also functioning as a vital metropolitan gateway.
