Hyderabad: Anti-mosquito breeding drive initiated by GHMC

On Monday, civic officials used a drone to drop oil balls into the Anantgiri lake in Banjara Hills to prevent mosquito breeding. GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and officials, who initiated a drive to prevent mosquito breeding, stated that steps will be taken to develop the lake.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) zonal commissioner Ravi Kiran, along with the Mayor and other officials, inspected the lake. According to a press release from the GHMC, mosquitoes are affecting people in the area because there is a lot of sewage flowing from above the pond.

The GHMC entomology department also removed and cleaned garbage from the Anantgiri lake. The GHMC Mayor stated on this occasion that due to the sewage coming from above in the Anantagani pit near Taj Banjara, Aeropus, a voluntary organization, has come forward through CSR to treat that water.

So far, anti-larval measures for mosquito control have been implemented in 52 of the GHMC’s 185 lakes.

On the same day, GHMC Deputy Mayor Mothe Srilatha Shoban Reddy met with officials from the GHMC’s entomology wing to discuss ongoing mosquito control efforts. She directed the wing to work tirelessly to combat the mosquito infestation in Hyderabad.

The Deputy Mayor also directed the GHMC’s entomology wing to conduct fogging and spraying operations in colonies, lakes, ponds, open and low-lying areas. Over 2300 workers will be deployed, with 125 units consisting of 19 members each.

It should be noted that Greater Hyderabad and its surrounding areas are witnessing an increase in Dengue cases, with the state recording 9,298 dengue cases so far. According to official data, Hyderabad has seen 4,245 cases. The case count, however, has not surpassed the 2019 high of 13,337.

The state health department increased its efforts to control the spread of the vector-borne disease earlier this month. As part of the drive against the disease, GHMC officials had deployed approximately 1,600 entomology experts, reports said.
