Hyderabad: Elaborate planning being done by police to ensure peaceful Bakrid

The police in the tri-commissionerates of Hyderabad, Rachakonda, and Cyberabad are planning thoroughly for the Eid-ul-Adha festival, which will be celebrated next month.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid in the sub-continent of India, sees massive trade in cattle and sheep going all the way up to millions of rupees. Traders sell cattle such as ox, bulls, and camels in the run-up to the festival.

Over the years, clashes between cattle traders and cow vigilante groups have reportedly heightened communal tensions. To avoid any trouble, police higher-ups directed that meetings be held and plans be made to ensure that no communal incident occurred.

So far, no problems have arisen when transporting sheep or goats; however, concerns arise when transporting cows and calves for sacrifice during Bakrid. Cow vigilante groups keep an eye on the vehicles transporting the cattle, stopping them and attempting to seize them forcefully, resulting in clashes.

Taking into consideration previous such clashes reported at Sagar Road – Saroornagar, Chintalmet – Rajendranagar, Narsingi Road, Moinabad Road, L B Nagar, and Vanasthalipuram, the police are preparing plans to ensure adequate police personnel deployment.

The emphasis is on patrolling and setting up check posts to prevent illegal cattle entry into the city and to keep an eye on cow vigilante groups.

The police have investigated the routes in the city and surrounding districts. To avoid any clashes, the police will not allow cattle transportation from religious majority-dominated areas. Cattle will be allowed only on designated routes in vehicles, in vehicles not by walking.

The police will soon hold a series of meetings with cattle traders and public representatives to better understand their concerns.
