Hyderabad: Fish in Lotus Pond die due to suspected drop in Dissolved Oxygen

A large number of fish have died in the Lotus Pond, Jubilee Hills Circle, over the previous two days as a result of a probable decline in dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the pond and the discharge of sewage water from upstream areas during the recent heavy rains.

After the incident and complaints raised by the locals, the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) and the Fisheries Department gathered water samples for examination. Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) also investigated the scene, and investigations were underway to determine what caused the incident to occur.

“Depletion of oxygen in the water is the most frequent cause of fish dying en masse. Excessive sewage in the water is one of the reasons for depleted oxygen, apart from other kinds of pollutants. The chance of chemical pollution is remote as the area is thickly populated,” an official was quoted as saying.

Recent intense rains in the upper catchment area may have caused massive flood discharge into the lake, disrupting the organic materials in the lake’s bottommost layer, and resulting in oxygen depletion and fish death.

The dead fish were being removed and the area was being cleaned, according to GHMC authorities. “Efforts are being made to control the foul smell are also underway and workers have been deployed for these tasks,” an official said. Measures to make sure more fish do not get affected would be taken up after the Fisheries Department and TSPCB identify the cause of the incident.
