Hyderabad flyovers to remain closed on Friday night

Except for Greenland’s Flyover, PVNR Expressway, and Langar Houz, all flyovers in the city will remain closed in view of ‘Shab-e-Barat’ on Friday.

“In connection with Shab-e-Barat in the intervening night of 18/19-03-2022, all flyovers in Hyderabad city, including PVNR Marg (necklace road), will be closed after 10:00 pm (except Greenland’s Flyover, PVNR Expressway, and Langar Houz),” said Hyderabad Traffic Police in an advisory.

The advisory went on to say that this was done solely to avoid any untoward incidents or road accidents, as well as for the safety of commuters.

Safety improvements for city flyovers

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will place a special emphasis on city flyovers in order to reduce traffic accidents. For starters, it would address issues with the Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao (PVNR) expressway and the Hi-tech city flyover.

This would be done as part of the Comprehensive Upgradation and Road Safety Interventions. The first phase of the project would cost Rs 3.78 crore.

An integrated road accident database (iRAD) project has been implemented across the state to ensure safe roads for all. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in collaboration with the Telangana Police Department, as well as the health and transportation departments, has taken the initiative to generate comprehensive information about road accidents.

The iRAD app would be used to collect and collate information about the victims and others involved in the accident. The details of the defects at the accident sites, the time of occurrence, related photos, videos, weather conditions, vehicle details along with the drivers’ information, injured persons’ information to treatment provided by hospitals would be collected by police officers who rushed to these locations.

In December of last year, Chief Secretary Somesh directed officials to form a team to investigate all aspects of city roads and flyovers. He also asked them to concentrate on aspects such as road crossings, signage, illumination, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), and camera-based speed enforcement in high-risk areas in order to reduce accidents.
