Hyderabad Traffic Police putting efforts to make city free of honking

The Hyderabad Traffic Police will conduct awareness programs to reduce noise pollution caused by honking, with the goal of making Hyderabad a Honking-Free City.

All TSRTC depots, taxi stops, auto-rickshaw stands, and higher educational institutions, including engineering colleges and PG colleges, will hold awareness programmes.

The Traffic Police took the initiative in response to complaints about health problems caused by the usage of multi-toned and air horns. The programmes will include a variety of stakeholders.

On Monday, officials from the Telangana State Pollution Control Board, the Traffic Police, the Regional Transport Authority, and the TSRTC met to discuss the plan for achieving the target. The meeting was also attended by travel companies, automobile mechanics, and car decor dealers.

AV Ranganath, Hyderabad’s Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), stated it was decided to hold awareness programmes about health hazards caused by vehicle honking and the use of air horns.

“Our goal is to make Hyderabad a Honking-Free City, and we will take all necessary steps to do so,” Ranganath added.

The Traffic Police are also equipped with sound metres to measure decibel levels, which they frequently employ to monitor pollution levels in restricted areas.

Effects of noise pollution

Millions of people are badly affected by noise pollution. There are direct links between noise and health, according to studies. Stress-related illnesses, high blood pressure, speech difficulties, hearing loss, sleep disruption and lost productivity are among problems caused by noise.
