Hyderabad: GHMC warns against dengue outbreak

An alert was issued by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) urging people in Hyderabad and the surrounding areas to take precautions against dengue.

As per reports, there have been 158 dengue cases reported in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in the last two months.

As the southwest monsoons, the season when dengue cases typically spike in Telangana, have not yet fully set in, the spike in the vector-borne disease in Hyderabad is a cause for concern.

Taking early preventive steps is important to prevent the spread of diseases like dengue, chicken pox, and malaria, which can be spread by mosquitoes.

It is the goal of the GHMC’s entomology department to raise public awareness of mosquito-borne illnesses and the measures that should be taken to reduce the risk of seasonal infections.

In addition to Covid infections, dengue cases have been on the rise in GHMC areas for the past two years. As a matter of fact, during the monsoon season, between July and August last year, over 1900 positive dengue cases were reported in Telangana while close to 500 positive cases were reported in Hyderabad.

To combat this, officials also conducted door-to-door fever examinations, conducted fogging operations, and sprayed lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water with drones to reduce mosquito populations.

In order to prevent the spread of diseases, door-to-door surveys would be conducted in the localities as soon as any dengue positivity is registered, and samples would be sent to laboratories if any symptoms are found. A total of 642 teams are using the pinpoint software to conduct anti-larvae operations. In each circle, 10 portable fogging machines and 64 mounted fogging machines operate every day.

Residents were also urged to devote 10 minutes every Sunday at 10 a.m. to keeping their homes and surrounding areas clean.
