Hyderabad: Govt sanctions Rs 94 crore for new bridges across Musi river

A budget of Rs 94 crore has been approved for the construction of two bridges across the Musi river, one at Musarambagh and the other near Chaderghat, which when ready will ease commuter woes in these parts of the old city, especially during the monsoon season.

Musarambagh was inspected by Animal Husbandry Minister T.Srinivas Yadav on Friday. He said tenders for the two projects would be floated within 10 days, with construction beginning shortly. As per instructions from Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao, the funds have been sanctioned.

It is expected that Rs 52 crore will be spent on the Musarambagh bridge, whereas Rs 42 crore will be spent on the Chaderghat facility.

In accordance with the proposal, a new high-level bridge will be built at Musarambagh bridge, which is a low-level carriageway. On the same bridge, pillars will be raised, and the facility will be bi-directional. The Musarambagh bridge is closed when it rains intensely and when Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar open their gates.

GHMC officials say the new bridge is designed to ensure a safe commute regardless of weather conditions. Because of the approaches, the new bridge will be a long one, and commuters from Amberpet will be able to travel to Musarambagh and on to Dilsukhnagar.

The second project, the bridge near Charderghat, has also been sanctioned to accommodate the growing number of commuters between older and newer parts of the city.

The official said the bridge at Chaderghat would be built on top of the existing small bridge. Due to its width and length, the new one here can also be used as a bi-directional facility.

Several people use the small bridge in Chaderghat to reach Dilsukhnagar and other parts of the city via Malakpet from Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), Kachiguda Railway Station, Koti and other places in the city.

Both existing bridges are overcrowded and cannot cope with the increasing traffic demand, which is why these two projects will be of great use to people, said the official.
