Swedish Home furnishing retailer IKEA India has stopped the sales of its popular vegetarian biryani and samosas following an incident of a foreign object in the dish last week.

Nearly a month after its inaugural launch in Hyderabad, Furniture giant IKEA has faced embarrassment after a customer alleged that a caterpillar was found in a food order served to him.

The incident happened on Friday last when a customer Abeed Mohammad ordered a vegetable Hyderabad biryani in IKEA’s Hyderabad store. The customer posted a picture of his food having caterpillar in his plate on Twitter and filed a complaint in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). who fined the store for Rs 11,500. The GHMC also issued a notice to the IKEA restaurant manager and also to Haldirams, the Nagpur vendor from which it procures food items.

While reacting over nearly five-days over the incident, the IKEA Spokesperson in statement on Wednesday said IKEA India is voluntarily stopping sales of its popular Vegetarian Biryani and Samosas following an incident.

“IKEA takes food safety and quality very seriously and customer health is always a priority. Following an incident on August 31, when a customer encountered a foreign object in the dish he ordered, IKEA India has voluntarily stopped sales of two of its most appreciated products – Vegetarian Biryani and Samosa, sourced locally in India.
