Hyderabad: Infant killed and four injured as SUV with ‘MLA’ sticker hits street vendors

A two-month-old infant was killed and four others were injured when a speeding SUV collided with street vendors in the posh Jubilee Hills area.

On Jubilee Hills Road Number 45, near Cable Bridge, the car rammed into a group of women selling balloons.

According to police, after crossing the Cable Bridge, the SUV travelling from Madhapur side collided with vendors on the footpath. Two infants in their mothers’ laps fell down. One of them was later declared dead at a nearby hospital.

Three women and a one-year-old child were admitted to the hospital for treatment. The victims were all migrants from Maharashtra who were begging and selling balloons on the streets.

Following the accident, the driver fled, leaving the vehicle with a Temporary Registration (TR) number behind. The vehicle, which is identified as a Mahindra Thar, also had an ‘MLA’ sticker pasted on it.

According to Jubilee Hills inspector Rajasekhar Reddy, the vehicle was discovered to be registered in the name of a construction company, and they were attempting to track down the driver using CCTV footage.

Police were also looking into whether there was only one person in the SUV or if there were more, as well as whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The MLA sticker discovered on the vehicle allegedly belongs to Amir Shakil, the MLA from the Bodhan constituency. However, the MLA from the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) clarified that he had nothing to do with the incident.

The MLA, who is said to be in Dubai, stated that he had given a sticker to a friend but did not know if it was the same sticker found on the vehicle involved in the accident.

So far, police have not been able to ‘identify’ the driver, nor have they been able to arrest or detain anyone.
