Hyderabad: Man Commits Suicide Due to Harassment from Loan App Agents

As per the latest reports, a 35-year-old man was discovered dead at his home in Hyderabad’s Bachupally on Monday, police said.

The victim, who has been identified as Rajesh, lived with his wife. Rajesh’s family members, who worked for an online grocery store, reported to police that he was being harassed by loan recovery agents from instant micro loan apps.

Bachupally police have launched an investigation into the death after filing an FIR under Section 174 (unnatural death) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

The police discovered an appeal to the government to block instant loan apps, just like how pornographic videos and online games are banned, on a writing board at the deceased’s home.

This was reportedly written by Rajesh and is thought to be his final words.

According to police, the executives of the instant loan app morphed his photos and threatened to share them with his contacts, along with abusive messages.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kukatpally Division) A. Chandra Sekhar, the preliminary investigation revealed that Rajesh had obtained instant micro loans ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 12,000 from as many as nine instant loan apps and owed a total of approximately Rs 60,000.

“He had been under pressure to repay the loans in the last few days. There are chats on his phone where he was threatened to pay up. There’s also his morphed photo, which they threatened to send to his contacts,” the ACP said, adding that the investigation is still ongoing.

Rajesh was at home alone at the time of the incident. The building watchman discovered his body after Rajesh’s wife reported that she couldn’t reach him on the phone. She had spent the last few days at their native place in Vijayawada for the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

Since 2020, Telangana has reported nearly a dozen deaths related to alleged harassment from instant loan apps.
