The much-anticipated expansion of Hyderabad Metro’s Green Line has officially commenced, marking a significant step in integrating the city’s Old City into its modern public transportation system. The extension, which will link Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayangutta, is a key part of the metro network’s second phase and aims to provide much-needed connectivity to one of Hyderabad’s most densely populated areas.
The expansion project, originally planned during the metro’s first phase, faced several delays due to alignment disputes and property acquisition challenges. However, the work is now underway, with demolition along the Mir Alam Mandi Road near Charminar, where roads are being widened to make way for metro pillars, viaducts, and stations.
The 7.5-kilometre elevated track extension will connect critical areas such as Shalibanda, Falaknuma, and Chandrayangutta. This extension is expected to provide a major boost to the region’s transportation infrastructure, offering residents a more efficient, modern, and reliable transit option.

Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) Managing Director NVS Reddy, in a statement, emphasized the significance of this expansion for the Old City, calling it “long due” and essential for integrating the area with Hyderabad’s broader transportation network. “I just signed 90 more cheques which will be handed over to property owners on Wednesday. Works are going to roll ahead in full swing,” Reddy added.
The project has already begun compensating affected property owners. In the first phase, 41 owners of 34 properties have received a total compensation of 20 crore rupees. Metro officials anticipate the total compensation package will reach around 1,000 crore rupees, covering approximately 1,100 properties along the expansion route.
Special care is being taken to protect heritage structures in the Old City. Metro officials have ensured that the alignment is designed to minimize the impact on historical buildings in the area, a concern raised by many local residents. While some residents expressed mixed feelings about the demolition of properties, many acknowledged the necessity of the project. One local resident remarked, “While the demolition of our properties is difficult to accept, we understand the necessity for development. We look forward to better connectivity in our area.”
The metro’s expansion is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the Old City and other parts of Hyderabad, benefiting thousands of daily commuters. Additionally, once further expansions are completed, the metro will provide seamless access to the city’s airport, further enhancing connectivity.
As the work progresses, HAML officials remain optimistic about the project’s completion and the positive impact it will have on both residents and visitors, transforming Hyderabad’s public transport landscape for the better.
