Hyderabad: More than 800 snakes rescued during summer

An NGO working for snake conservation in India, the Friends of Snake Society (FOSS) rescued approximately 600 snakes in February; that number increased to 800 by March.

“We have rescued over 800 snakes in April too,” the group stated. The rise in temperatures in April and May contributed to a greater number of snake rescues than in February. Avinash Viswanathan, FOSS General Secretary, said, “These months are also breeding times for two snake species.

The weather in Hyderabad is sweltering, which is making snake sightings more frequent as slithery creatures emerge from their burrows.

During these months, the Indian cobra, or spectacled cobra, breeds as well as the rat snake. In addition to snakes on the outskirts of cities, snakes were also rescued in the city.

A majority of them were rescued from densely populated areas of the city. FOSS members predicted a gradual decline in SOS calls after the second week of May.

The temperature acts as an indicator for snakes to breed. By the end of February, the cobra breeding period starts and continues for over a month, and in April, rat snake breeding commences and continues for a month.

By the middle of May, with the temperatures reaching too high levels and the breeding period ending, the number of rescue operations plummets,” said Avinash.
