Hyderabad: Mufti police to patrol in plain clothes now

To manage law and order in stealth, police higher-ups have redesigned ‘Mufti’ cops to blend in with crowds. In contrast to earlier times, when a policeman in mufti meant he was wearing khaki pants, cops can now roam in plain clothes completely.

Policemen in Hyderabad are given a dress code to follow depending on the occasion or event. As an example, the Muharram processions that took place in Hyderabad a day earlier.

During the inauguration of the Command and Control Centre at Banjara Hills in Hyderabad last week, a group of youngsters caught the attention of reporters. They wore black pants and plain shirts. They were actually cops from the City Police Headquarters, standing in two rows forming ‘police files’.

During the inaugural program, they mixed with the crowd and kept an eye on visitors. Standing near corporate offices close to the Hyderabad Command and Control Centre, the team doubled as spotters. They are taking note of what is going on around them.

Telugu-speaking youngsters caught the attention of procession participants during Tuesday’s Muharram procession in Hyderabad. Their black jeans and t-shirts revealed that they were also policemen from the City Police Headquarters. They were also tasked with mixing with the procession participants and keeping an eye on them.

Additionally, a chain was to be formed near Ashurkhanas where the Bibi ka Alam would stop briefly to prevent anyone from getting near it.

To maintain law and order, a few policemen went in mufti during the bonalu celebrations as well.

According to a senior Hyderabad police official, mufti cops play a crucial role in the city. In public meetings, processions, and large gatherings, special teams of civil police are now deployed. The clothes of the mufti police team are given special attention in order to con the public, he said.
