Hyderabad: Ola Cabs fined Rs 95k for overcharging customer

The cases of being overcharged by cab aggregator companies such as Ola and Uber are on the rise in India. Taking serious note of one such incident, a consumer court in Hyderabad ordered Ola Cabs to pay Rs 95,000 to a customer for overcharging and poor service.

The petitioner claimed that he was charged Rs 861 for a 4-5 km journey that should have cost no more than Rs 200.

Jabez Samuel complained that he, his wife, and an assistant had reserved a cab for four hours on October 19, 2021. They found the cab to be untidy, and the driver not only refused to turn on the air conditioning but also treated them rudely.

They got off the cab after traveling for about 4-5 kilometers. A bill in the amount of Rs 861 was generated. Because he used the Ola money cash credit service, the complainant did not have to pay the driver.

The petitioner informed the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission that they had to make alternative arrangements and miss some of the scheduled programs that day. Samuel stated that he filed a complaint with Ola Cabs regarding an excessive bill, but that the company’s higher authorities did not intervene.

He claimed that Ola executives repeatedly called him and asked him to pay the bill. He paid the bill in January 2022 but sought justice through the consumer court.

Despite being served with notice, Ola Cabs did not appear before the commission to contest the case.

Taking Samuel’s complaint and the mental anguish he suffered into consideration, the commission ordered the ridesharing company to pay Rs 88,000 in compensation to the customer and Rs 7,000 in hearing costs.

The commission set a compliance deadline of 45 days, and if the firm fails to comply, it will be required to pay interest.

The company has also been ordered to refund Rs 861, plus interest at 12% per annum from the date of the journey until realization.
