Hyderabad: Police Arrest Two Men for Stealing 432 Phones from Showroom

Police have arrested two men from Jharkhand for stealing 432 mobile phones from an electronic showroom on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Rachakonda Police announced the arrest of two members of the notorious inter-state gang ‘Alam gang’ on Thursday, while four others were still at large.

With these arrests, police claimed to have solved the case involving the theft that occurred on the intervening night of September 20 and 21.

The accused managed to break into the Bajaj Electronics store at ECIL X Roads and stole 432 mobile phones worth Rs 70 lakh from various brands such as Oppo, Vivo, and Apple.

On September 21, a theft case was filed at the Kushaiguda police station of Rachakonda Police Commissionerate.

According to the CCTV footage, three unknown people wearing face masks entered the store on September 20 around 11 p.m. by breaking open the false ceiling on the first floor. At 3 a.m., they stole the mobile phones.

As part of the investigation, 10 teams from Rachakonda police’s Kushaiguda division scanned CCTV footage from over 500 cameras along the accused’s route taken to the shop. The police also tracked down the autorickshaw they used to travel between ECIL and Ambedkar Nagar.

Following the identification of the accused, a police team was dispatched to Jharkhand, where the main accused, Sattar Shaik (40), was apprehended on September 30 with the assistance of Sahaebgunj district police.

On October 2, a second team was dispatched to West Bengal, where it conducted a raid in collaboration with the three police stations of Malda district and apprehended Asidil Shekh (20).

The accused was arrested with Rs 80,000 in cash and two mobile phones.

During the interrogation, the duo confessed to the crime along with four other Jharkhand residents, Sayeed, Asharaul, Badruddin, and Beullah. Police said they were working hard to apprehend the four absconding accused.

According to police, the accused are members of the ‘Alam gang,’ which typically targets large establishments such as banks, jewelry stores, and mobile phone stores at night.

The accused break into stores by drilling holes in the walls or roofs, and after committing thefts, they seek refuge in areas close to the borders with countries such as Bangladesh. As a result, it is difficult for police to apprehend offenders and recover the stolen property as the same is sent to countries like Bangladesh and Nepal.

Sattar, according to police, was involved in thefts in Mumbai, Delhi, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Gujarat. On May 9, 2022, the gang was also involved in the theft of gold jewelry worth Rs 2 crore from the Union Bank of India branch in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.
