Hyderabad police to take action against people sharing fake kidnapping videos

City police have warned that persons who share fake videos of child kidnappers and create panic in the public will face strict action.

A two-minute video on social media platforms claiming 500 kidnappers are out and about kidnapping children and girls in the country got viral, triggering the warning.

A message from the kidnappers, now in Hyderabad, has gone viral on social media.

As a result of the video coming to the police’s attention, a warning has been issued to the people and Whatsapp group administrators that they could face criminal charges for spreading rumors and disturbing the peace.

The public is urged to report any such videos to their local police stations, after which a case will be booked and an investigation will take place.

Youngsters to assist city police in fighting fake news

Young people in the city will now assist the Hyderabad City Police in combating rumors and misinformation, thereby contributing to efforts to maintain law and order and thwart attempts to disrupt peace in the city.

This move is part of the City Police Department’s efforts to revamp the peace committees in Hyderabad, which have been critical in maintaining harmony in the city.

The goal of having young people on peace committees is to help the police respond to and debunk rumors on social media platforms as soon as possible. The youth are hyperactive on social media platforms and can quickly clarify any rumor spread on SM platforms, said CV Anand, City Police Commissioner.

A peace committee is being formed at each police station, with the Commissioner directing police officials to ensure that at least 50% of the members of these committees are young people, including students and working professionals. Local police are already training such people to recognize fake news and how to combat it.
