Hyderabad: Rachakonda police bust online cricket betting racket

Rachakonda Police busted an online cricket betting racket, catching nine suspects, including the organizers. There were orders to freeze two bank accounts with a combined amount of Rs 31.17 lakh and an amount of Rs 11.80 lakh was seized.

Mahesh Bhagwat, the police commissioner of Rachakonda, said the bookies used connections to set up telephonic lines, and they gave punters line numbers.

As soon as the first ball of the first over is bowled, betting begins and is continuous until the very last ball. It fluctuates depending on the situation. While the match is being played, punters contact the bookies and place bets. As bookies note down details about the wager and punter, the conversation is also automatically recorded, he said.

He said that when a match is over, bookies inform their collection agents about the details of collection and distribution of amounts, such as how much money has to be collected from a given punter and how much has to be given.

Using that information, the collection agents collect the money from losers, distribute it to the winners, and give the remainder, i.e., profit, to the bookies. Sometimes, punters transfer money directly to bookies via Paytm, Net Banking, etc. The primary bookie will give sub bookies three per cent of the overall profit, he added.
