Hyderabad Receives Surplus Rainfall, Alleviating Water Deficit

The recent strong rainfall in Hyderabad, Telangana, has increased the city’s total rainfall for the current South-West (SW) Monsoon season significantly. Hyderabad got 299 percent extra rainfall from July 19 to 26, 2023, over three times the typical amount for this period.

The cumulative rainfall in Hyderabad during the current SW Monsoon season has reached 399.1 mm, a 53 percent departure from the usual level of 260.5 mm. This surplus rainfall has contributed to closing the gap and bringing overall rainfall in the city closer to normal for the whole SW Monsoon season.

Last year’s SW Monsoon season in Hyderabad deviated by 32%, with total rainfall of 742.9 mm compared to the normal of 562.1 mm.

Similarly, the average cumulative rainfall for the entire state of Telangana during the current SW Monsoon season has reached 530.2 mm, compared to the typical level of 329.3 mm, with a 61 percent difference. Last year’s SW Monsoon season in Telangana deviated by 52%, with total rainfall of 1098.8 mm compared to the usual of 721.2 mm.

The recent strong rains have changed the rainfall condition in Hyderabad and other Telangana districts from deficit to surplus. The surplus rains provided much-needed respite to the region, replenishing water reservoirs and agricultural lands. Authorities will, however, need to closely watch the situation to ensure that there are no negative consequences, such as floods or waterlogging, as a result of the significant rainfall.
