Hyderabad: Residents want Charminar’s night restrictions lifted

Charminar, a historical monument in the city, is being proposed as an ‘all night recreational spot’ where night restrictions should be lifted.

The city’s historical landmark from the 16th century is visited by hundreds of people late at night to enjoy its tranquil, soothing atmosphere.

“Visiting Charminar at that time is quite a traumatizing experience due to a lot of noise and air pollution. We prefer to visit during the night, but the bad thing is the police send us away at 12 midnight,” complained Manjulu, a call centre employee from Secunderabad.

The monument is too crowded and busy during the daytime, so most people avoid visiting it during the day.

“Compared to daytime there is a lot of open space where people can sit comfortably and spend quality time with friends and families,” said Satish Kumar, a resident of Yousufguda who visited the monument with his friends.

Families, professionals, and students from far-off places stay in hostels near Charminar during the night, and some even celebrate birthdays there. Social media and news portals have helped tourists become aware of the late-night ambience, so they come in small groups.

“Many visitors were dismayed to see the police arrive sharp at midnight and chase visitors away. Visitors who come to enjoy Charminar’s fine ambience should not be asked to leave at midnight sharp. People should be allowed to hang out till 2 am,” said Jyothi Kumari, who lives in Chikkadpally.

It has been questioned why it is wrong for Charminar to allow people to stay until 1 a.m. on weekends when discos and pubs can run till then?

The place is covered with surveillance cameras so security shouldn’t be an issue said a software professional from Banjara Hills.

A night bazaar was proposed by the state government to promote nightlife around the monument (Charminar). The proposal, however, remains pending due to a lack of wholehearted efforts by the local public representatives and officials.

On condition of anonymity, a police official said that there is a lot of work for the police to do during the night, and there are no personnel patrolling the area.

He said that if night activity is allowed, hundreds of people will attend. The bandobast is to be arranged in order to ensure the safety of the visitors. Moreover, the area is highly sensitive due to its presence of more than two temples, three mosques, and a chilla.
